2021년 6월 1일, 조 바이든 행정부에서 내무장관이 되기 위해 데브 할랜드 하원의원이 미국 하원에서 사임함에 따라 만들어진 뉴멕시코 제1의원 선거구의 공석을 메우기 위한 특별 선거가 실시되었습니다.

주 하원의원 패트리샤 로이발 카발레로, 조지네 루이스, 멜라니 스탠스베리, 주 상원의원 앙투아네트 세딜로 로페즈가 민주당 후보 지명을 노렸습니다. 마크 무어 주 상원의원, 에디 아라곤 라디오 진행자, 엘리사 마르티네스 활동가 등이 공화당 후보 지명을 노렸습니다.

민주당은 스탠스베리를, 공화당은 무어를, 자유당은 크리스 매닝을, 전 공공토지위원장 오브리 던 주니어는 무소속으로 출마했습니다. 스탠스베리는 60%가 넘는 득표율로 당선되었습니다.[1]

배경

뉴멕시코 제1의회 선거구의 미셸 루잔 그리샴 하원의원은 2016년에 2018년 주지사 선거에 민주당 후보로 지명될 것이라고 발표했습니다.[2] 데브 할랜드 전 뉴멕시코 민주당 대표는 민주당 공천으로 출마해 2018년 선거에서 승리했습니다.[3] 그녀는 2020년 선거에서 재선되었습니다.[4]

Haaland는 Joe Biden 대통령에 의해 내무장관으로 임명되었고 그녀는 51 대 40의 투표로 미국 상원으로부터 승인을 받았습니다.[5][6] Haaland는 2021년 3월 16일에 의원직을 사임했고, 6월 1일에 뉴멕시코 국무장관으로부터 특별 선거를 실시하라는 명령을 받았습니다.[7][8] 각 당의 주 중앙위원회는 경선 방식 대신 자신들의 후보를 특별선거에 뽑았습니다.[9]

2018년 민주당 예비선거에 출마한 뉴멕시코 상원의원 앙투아네트 세딜로 로페즈와 뉴멕시코 하원의원 멜라니 스탠스베리는 2020년 12월 21일 특별선거를 위해 민주당 후보 지명을 추진하겠다고 발표했습니다.[10][11] 2021년 1월 4일, 주 하원 의원인 Georgene Louis는 민주당 후보 지명을 받겠다고 발표했습니다.[12] 루잔 그리샴 주지사의 입법 책임자인 빅터 레이예스는 1월 8일 민주당의 지명을 받겠다고 발표했습니다.[13] 주 하원의원인 Patricia Roybal Caballero는 1월 27일에 그녀의 캠페인을 발표했습니다.[14]

스탠스베리는 결선 투표에서 1위를 차지했던 세딜로 로페즈를 꺾고 후보에 올랐습니다.[15]
