주일강좌회
Sunday Lecture Society주일강좌회는 일요일에 여러 차례 영향력 있는 강의를 한 영국계 사회였다.첫 번째 사회는 성에서 만났다. 예술, 역사, 과학, 문학에 대한 강의를 들을 수 있는 조지 홀, 랭햄 플레이스[1].[2]1869년 11월 법무관 윌리엄 헨리 돔빌에 의해 결성되었다.[3]이 협회는 1865년 11월 내셔널 선데이 리그(NSL)가 "국민을 위한 일요일 저녁"이라는 제목의 일반 대중을 위한 일련의 강연을 열었기 때문에 생겨났다.이는 주날 준수회(LDOS)가 4회만 강의한 뒤 강의가 취소된 것에 대해 격렬하게 반대했다.이는 1780년 일요 준수법에 따라 주일 강연이 금지되자 법적 대응으로 성 마틴 회관 운영을 위협해 이뤄졌다.[4]그 여파로 NSL을 대신하여 주일강좌회가 결성된 것은 얼마 후였다.
부통령으로는 토마스 헨리 헉슬리, 허버트 스펜서, 윌리엄 스팟티스우드, 존 틴달, 찰스 다윈 등이 있었다.[5]제럴드 파슨스는 "헉슬리는 왕립학회에서 같은 직책을 맡으면서 1884년 대통령직을 사양했지만 조직적 회의를 주재하기도 했다"고 지적했다.[3]
일요 강습회는 곧 타이네데일로 진출하여 리즈에 있는 쿡리지 거리에 위치한 콜리세움 극장에서 모임을 가졌다.[6]1894년 LDOS는 일요일 준수법에 따라 주일 강습회 리즈 지부를 기소하도록 강요하여 알더만 워드와 가바치 킹, 그리고 윌슨 씨인 콜리세움 소유주의 두 명의 회원을 구속했다.[7]판사가 그들에게 불리한 판결을 내렸음에도 불구하고, 일요강습회는 나중에 항소심에서 이것이 뒤집혔고 LDOS의 행동은 비용과 함께 기각되었다.[7]존 위글리는 빅토리아 시대의 흥망성쇠에 대해 자신의 저서에서 이렇게 쓰고 있는데, 검찰 이후 또 다른 단체인 선데이 소사이어티가 자신들을 더 잘 방어하기 위해 선데이 소사이어티(National Association of Sunday Society)를 결성했기 때문에, 그는 이것이 "실체적인 실수"였다고 생각한다고 말한다.[8]게다가, 검찰은 일요일 강연회 회원 중 한 명인 Lord Hobhouse를 설득하여 일요일 강연회 법안을 상원에 제출하도록 했고, 그 법안은 두 번째 낭독 때 위원회에 회부되었다.[8]위글리는 Sabbatarians가 "좋은 인상을 주지 않고 오히려 그들의 편을 들어주었다"[8]고 말한다.그럼에도 불구하고 이 법안은 제정되지 않았고, 1897년 홉하우스가 도입한 두 번째 일요일 법안도 통과되지 못했다.[9]
