Sun Java System Directory Server는 단종된 LDAP 디렉토리 서버와 C로 작성된 DSML 서버로 원래 Sun Microsystems가 개발하였다.[1]자바 시스템 디렉터리 서버는 자바 엔터프라이즈 시스템의 구성 요소다.Sun Java System Directory Server의 초기 반복은 Sun ONE Directory Server, iPlanet Directory Server, 그리고 그 이전에는 Netscape Directory Server로 알려져 있었다.

Sun Java System Directory Server는 Sun Directory Server Enterprise Edition이 되었으며 현재 Oracle Directory Server Enterprise Edition(ODSEE)으로 알려져 있다.[2]

소프트웨어는 개인, 상업, 서비스 제공업체 또는 연구 및 교육 환경에서 영구적으로 사용할 수 있도록 무료로 제공되었다.Sun 제품의 새로운 공식 사이트인 Oracle 웹사이트에서 다운로드할 수 있지만, 이 사이트에서는 최신 버전(DSEE 7, ODSEE 11.1.5.0으로 재브랜드됨)만 볼 수 있다.

Sun은 2011년 자바에서 OpenDS를 개발하기 시작했는데, 이는 C언어로 Sun Java System Directory Server를 개발하는 데 너무 많은 문제가 있었기 때문이다.[1][3][4]코드 베이스는 2011년 이후 업데이트되지 않았다.[5]
