말의 Protohippus는 멸종된 똬리를 튼 유인원 속이다.[3] 현대적인 당나귀의 그것은 비슷한 크기의. Fossil 증거는 그것이 후기 중신세(Hemphillian에Clarendonian) 해 13.6마 5.3Ma.[4]까지 살았던 것을 시사한다.
Protohippus의 두개골과 이빨의 분석 결과 가장 밀접하게 다르칼리와 관련된 것을 시사한다.[4]
