Project Builder는 원래 NeXT가 NextSTEP 운영체제 버전3용으로 개발한 통합개발환경(IDE)으로 Interface Builder의 코드 편집 부분을 자체 어플리케이션으로 [1]분리하여 개발하였습니다.
애플 컴퓨터가 NeXT를 구입하고 NeXTSTEP를 Mac OS X 운영 체제로 전환한 후 NeXTSTEP 버전의 Project Builder가 되었습니다.WO(WebObjects 개발만을 위해 유지 관리됨)는 소프트웨어 개발을 위한 새로운 프로젝트 빌더를 처음부터 만들었습니다. 첫 번째 버전은 Mac OS [3]X의 Developer Preview 4와 함께 소개되었습니다.PBX라고 하는 이 버전의 [4]Project Builder는 Mac OS X의 처음 몇 가지 버전과 함께 배포되었지만 Mac OS X v10.3 출시와 함께 재설계되고 Interface Builder와 다시 통합되며 Xcode로 [5][6][7]브랜드가 변경되었습니다.
GNUStep의 ProjectCenter IDE는 원래 NextStep 설계의 대략적인 형태입니다.다른 기능은 서드파티제의 GNUStep IDE인 ProjectManager에 의해 제공됩니다.
