오메카는 온라인 디지털 컬렉션을 위한 무료 오픈소스 콘텐츠 관리 시스템이다.[2]웹 어플리케이션으로서, 이용자들이 문화유산 물건들을 출판하고[3] 전시할 수 있도록 하고, 테마와 플러그인으로 그 기능을 확장할 수 있다.DSpace, Fedora와 같은 전통적인 기관 리포지토리 소프트웨어에 비해 경량 솔루션인[4] 오메카는 디스플레이에 중점을 두고 있으며 자격이 없는 더블린 코어 메타데이터 표준을 사용한다.[5][6]

그것의 소프트웨어는 현재 뉴베리 도서관은 물론 많은 작은 박물관들과 역사학회에서 사용되고 있다.[7]미주리 저널리즘 스쿨은 오메카를 사용하여 올해의 사진 공모전에 나온 38,000장의 사진을 보관하고 있다.[8][9][10]

원래 조지 메이슨 대학교의 로이 로젠츠바이그 역사 및 뉴미디어 센터가 개발한 [11]오메카는 앤드류 멜론 재단으로부터[12] 기술협력상을 받아 큐레이션을 가르치는 데 사용된다.[13][14]오메카 프로젝트는 2016년부터 비영리법인 디지털장학금이 개발한 프로젝트다.

2017년 11월, 이 프로젝트는 기관용 오메카의 새로운 버전인 오메카 S를 출시하여, 이 경우 위키다타와 같은 공통 자원[15][16] 풀에서 끌어오는 복수의 사이트를 제3자 모듈을 통해 호스팅할 수 있는 기능을 제공한다.[17]오메카 클래식(Omeka Classic)은 오메카 S와 함께 개별 프로젝트와 교육자 서비스를 중심으로 계속 존재할 예정이다.[18]
