맥켈러는 달 저편에 있는 달 충돌 분화구로 지구에서 직접 볼 수 없다.크라우크스 분화구의 남서쪽에 놓여 있으며, 이 충격으로 인한 광선계가 맥켈라의 바닥과 측면을 덮고 있다.남쪽으로는 약간 작은 복이 있다.
이 분화구는 북서쪽 테두리를 따라 작은 분화구가 있어 다소 침식되어 있다.내부 바닥은 중간 지점의 북쪽과 서쪽으로 배열된 3개의 능선 군락을 제외하고는 비교적 평평하다.이 분화구 바로 남쪽에는 표면에 높은 알베도 조각이 있는데, 이는 보통 비교적 신선한 충격을 나타내는 것으로 해석된다.
위성 분화구
관례에 따라 이러한 특징들은 달 지도에서 맥켈라에서 가장 가까운 분화구 중간 지점의 측면에 글자를 배치함으로써 확인된다.
