Kaernefeltia는 1996년 이끼학자 Anne Tell과 Trevor Goward에 의해 이전에 Cetraria californica(모형종)와 C. merrilli로 알려진 북미 서부의 종을 포함하도록 제한되었다.속명은 스웨덴의 이끼학자 잉그바르 케르네펠트의 [1]이름을 따왔다.
