조셉 포터 코튼(Joseph Potter Cotton, 1875년 7월 22일 ~ 1931년 3월 10일)은 1929년부터 1931년 사망할 때까지 미국 국무부 차관보를 역임한 미국의 정치인 겸 변호사였다.[3]
전기
코튼은 1875년 7월 22일 로드 아일랜드 뉴포트에서 태어났다.1896년 하버드 대학에서 미술학사를 취득하고 1900년 하버드 로스쿨을 졸업했다.[4]뉴욕에서 저명한 변호사로 일하다가 1907년 법무법인 크래바스, 헨더슨, 드 거스도르프의 회원이 되었다.1910년, 그는 Super & Cotton의 회사에서 John Coit Super와 함께 입사했다.[5][6]1915년, 그는 알래스카 철도 위원회의 연방 검사로 일하기 위해 워싱턴으로 갔다.[1]1919년 윌리엄 깁스 맥아두의 법률 파트너가 되어 맥아두, 코튼 & 프랭클린의 회사를 설립했다.그는 또한 미국 식품청 육류과장을 역임했고, 그곳에서 허버트 후버 대통령과 친구가 되었고, 그는 당시 미국 식품청장을 역임했다.[8][9][2]

코튼은 볼티모어에 있는 존스 홉킨스 병원에서 의사들이 그의 척추에서 종양을 제거했던 척수 감염으로 입원했다.그는 오른쪽 눈에 혈독이 생겼는데, 이를 제거해야 했다.그는 1931년 3월 10일 두 번의 큰 수술을 받았고 감염으로 인한 합병증에 굴복했다.[12]
코튼 씨의 죽음은 정부와 우리나라에 큰 손실이다.그는 20년 넘게 내 친구였다.그는 자신의 삶의 많은 부분을 공직에 바쳤고 공익의 요구를 거절한 적이 없다.그의 능력, 성격, 최고의 목적에 대한 헌신이 그를 위대한 시민으로 만들었다.
