잉크웰(Inkwell)은 Apple Inc.가 개발하고 Mac OS X 운영 체제에 내장된 필기 인식 기술의 이름입니다.Mac OS X v10.2 "Jaguar" 업데이트에서 소개된 Inkwell은 영어, 프랑스어 및 독일어 쓰기를 번역할 수 있습니다.이 기술은 단명 애플 뉴턴 개인 디지털 어시스턴트의 운영체제인 애플 뉴턴 OS의 핵심 기능인 "로제타"로 첫 선을 보였다.잉크웰이 맥 OS X에 포함되면서 많은 사람들은 애플이 새로운 PDA나 다른 휴대용 태블릿 컴퓨터에 이 기술을 사용할 것이라고 믿게 되었다.터치스크린 iOS 디바이스(iPhone/iPod/iPad) 중 잉크웰 필기 인식을 제공하는 기기는 없습니다.단, 아이패드에서는OS 14 필기 인식은 스크리블이라고 불리는 기능으로 도입되었습니다.[1]

잉크웰이 활성화되면 반투명 노란색 줄지 형태로 나타나며, 이 종이 위에 글씨가 나타납니다.사용자가 쓰기를 중단하면, 사용자가 단어를 입력했을 때와 같이, 해당 쓰기가 잉크웰에 의해 해석되어 현재 애플리케이션(활성 텍스트 커서가 있는 곳)에 붙여넣어집니다.또한 사용자는 Inkwell이 자신의 글을 해석하지 않도록 강제할 수 있으며, 대신 손으로 그린 스케치를 활성 창에 붙여넣기 위해 사용할 수 있습니다.

잉크웰은 래리 예거, 브랜딘 웹, 리처드 [2]라이온에 의해 개발되었다.

macOS 10.14 모하비에서 애플은 잉크웰이 32비트를 유지한다고 발표하여 macOS 10.15 [3]Catalina와 호환되지 않게 만들었다.2019년 10월 7일 macOS Catalina 출시와 함께 정식 단종되었다.

Despite the abysmal recognition accuracy in the first generation Newton, most Newton afficianados or people interested in handwriting recognition will tell you that the second generation, "Print Recognizer" in Newton OS 2.x was a vast improvement, offering fast and surprisingly accurate recognition. Unlike the first generation software, this second generation recognition engine was developed in-house at Apple, in the Advanced Technology Group (ATG), later (and briefly) renamed the Apple Research Laboratories (ARL). I served as Technical Lead for the project, and together with a core team of three Apple engineers and two contractors, plus a host of other contributors (most of whom are listed in the slides mentioned below), we managed to produce what many have called the first genuinely usable handwriting recognition system. The technical papers, articles, and slides below document a lot of the key technological hurdles that were overcome and the innovations that were made in order to make this possible. The core recognition technology from the Newton has gained a new lease on life in the Jaguar release of Mac OS X (10.2). Together with a different team of engineers I have helped integrate handwriting recognition into Mac OS X in such a way that it just works with all existing apps; i.e., applications are not required to rev in order to support ink and the routine input of text by a pen and graphics tablet. This technology has been dubbed "Inkwell". (Partly it just seemed like a good name, plus I have a long-standing fondness for the Fleischer Brothers' animations, including their "Out of the Inkwell" series.) ...
