휴고 최우수 팬 아티스트상은 세미프로진이나 팬진 등 저임금 출판물에 등장한 공상과학소설이나 판타지 관련 작품 작가들에게 매년 수여된다.전문 아티스트에 대한 휴고상도 수여된다.휴고 어워드는 "투기적인 소설의 훌륭한 쇼케이스"와 "공상과학 소설의 가장 잘 알려진 문학상"으로 묘사되어 왔다.[1][2]
팬상은 1967년에 처음 시상되었으며 매년 시상되어 왔다.1996년부터 시작된 회고전 휴고상(Retro Hugo Awards, "Retro Hugos")은 50년, 75년, 100년 전에 상을 받을 수 있었다.[3]지금까지 레트로 위고 상은 1946년과 1951년 레트로 휴고스만이 팬 아티스트 위고가 투표할 수 있을 만큼 충분한 지명을 받았음에도 불구하고 1939년, 1941년, 1943년—1946년, 1954년에 수여되었다.[4][5]
휴고상 후보자와 수상자는 매년 열리는 세계과학소설컨벤션(World Science Fiction Convention, Worldcon)의 회원들을 지지하거나 참석하여 선정하며, 발표의 저녁이 그 중심 행사를 구성한다.선정과정은 세계과학소설학회 헌법에 동수인 경우를 제외하고 6명의 후보자가 참여한 즉석 결선투표로 규정돼 있다.투표용지에 실린 작품들은 그해 회원들이 가장 많이 지명한 작품 6개로, 지명이 가능한 작품 수에 제한이 없다.[3]최초 공천은 1~3월 회원들이 하고, 6개 공천 투표는 4~7월 대략 실시되는데, 그해 월드콘이 언제 열리느냐에 따라 달라질 수 있다.[6]2017년 이전까지 최종 투표는 5개 작품이었다. 그 해는 6개로 변경되었고, 각 최초 지명자는 5개 지명으로 제한되었다.[7]월드콘은 일반적으로 노동절 근처에서, 그리고 매년 세계의 다른 도시에서 열린다.[8][9]

레트로 후고스
1996년 월드콘을 시작으로 세계과학소설협회는 휴고상을 50년, 75년, 100년 전에 소급해서 수여할 수 있는 '레트로 후고스'라는 개념을 만들었다.레트로 후고스는 월드콘이 개최된 몇 년 동안만 상을 받을 수 있지만, 원래 어떤 상도 수여되지 않았다.[3]레트로 후고스는 1939년, 1941년, 1943년—1946년, 1951년, 1954년에 걸쳐 8번이나 상을 받았다.[5]1946년과 1951년 레트로 후고스만이 팬 아티스트 휴고가 투표에 참여할 수 있는 충분한 후보들을 받았다.[65][4]
