휴고상 극영화상은 전년도 개봉한 공상과학소설이나 판타지와 관련된 연극영화, 텔레비전 에피소드, 또는 다른 극작품을 대상으로 매년 수여된다.[1]원래 이 상은 영화 작품과 TV 작품 모두를 대상으로 하였으나, 2003년 이후 '최고의 드라마틱 프리젠테이션(긴 형식)'과 '최고의 드라마틱 프리젠테이션(짧은 형식)'의 두 부문으로 나뉘었다.드라마틱 프리젠테이션 어워드는 전년도 최고의 공상과학소설 또는 판타지 작품과 업적을 위해 세계공상과학소설협회가 매년 수여하는 더 넓은 휴고 어워드의 일부분이다.이 상은 최초의 공상과학잡지 어메이징 스토리(Amazing Stories)의 창시자인 휴고 젠스백의 이름을 따서 지어졌으며, 한때 공상과학 공로상(Science Ficture Award)으로 공식 알려지기도 했다.[2]그 상은 "투기적인 소설의 훌륭한 쇼케이스"[3]로 묘사되어 왔다.
역사
이 상은 1958년에 처음 수여되었으며, 1964년과 1966년의 예외로 2002년까지 매년 새로 만들어진 드라마틱 프리젠테이션(긴 형식)과 드라마틱 프리젠테이션(짧은 형식) 부문에 유리하게 은퇴하여 작품의 길이가 90분인지 짧은지에 따라 카테고리를 나누었다.1964년과 1966년 수상에서는 이 부문을 뒷받침할 충분한 후보작들이 발표되지 않았다.[4][5]1971년 이전에는 "라디오, 텔레비전, 무대 또는 스크린"의 작품을 포함하는 범주로 정의되었고, 이후 "극화된 공상과학소설 또는 판타지의 모든 매체"로 확대되어 녹음된 노래와 기타 작품들이 선정되었다.[6]일반 휴고상 외에도 1996년 회고전 휴고상(Retro Hugo Awards) 또는 "Retro Hugos"는 상이 수여되지 않은 50년, 75년 또는 100년 전에 수여될 수 있었다.[7]지금까지 레트로 위고 상은 1939년, 1941년, 1943년–1946년, 1951년, 1954년에 수여되었으며, 1946년과 1951년에 수여된 상은 '최고의 드라마틱 프리젠테이션' 부문, 1939년, 1945년, 1954년에 수여된 상은 '짧은 형식' 부문이었다.그 기간 동안 롱 폼 부문에서 상을 받기에 충분한 후보지명이 없었다.1941년과 1944년 상은 Long과 Short Form 둘 다에 대한 상이었다.[8]
휴고상 후보 및 수상자는 매년 열리는 세계공상과학소설컨벤션(Worldcon)의 회원들을 지원하거나 참석하여 선정하며, 발표의 저녁이 그 중심 행사를 구성한다.선정과정은 세계과학소설학회 헌법에 동수인 경우를 제외하고 6명의 후보자가 참여한 즉석 결선투표로 규정돼 있다.투표용지에 실린 작품들은 그해 회원들이 가장 많이 지명한 6편으로, 지명이 가능한 작품 수에 제한이 없다.1958년 수상에는 2위 잡지에 대한 인정은 포함되지 않았으나 1959년 이후 6명의 후보가 모두 기록되었다.[7]최초 공천은 1~3월 회원들이 하고, 6개 공천 투표는 4~7월 대략 실시되는데, 그해 월드콘이 언제 열리느냐에 따라 달라질 수 있다.[9]2017년 이전까지 최종 투표는 5개 작품이었는데, 그 해는 6개로 변경되었고, 각 최초 지명자는 5개 지명으로 제한되었으며, 최종 투표에서는 시리즈당 2개 작품 이상이 허용되지 않았다.[10]월드콘은 일반적으로 9월 초에 개최되며, 매년 전 세계 다른 도시에서 열린다.[2][11]회원들은 만약 그들이 그 해에 후보자들 중 누구도 상을 받을 자격이 없다고 생각한다면 "상 없음"을 투표할 수 있고, "상 없음"이 대다수를 차지하는 경우, 위고는 그 부문에서 주어지지 않는다.이것은 1959년, 1963년, 1971년, 1977년에 네 번이나 드라마틱 프리젠테이션 부문에서 일어났다.[12][13][14][15]

71년 후보 기간 동안 최우수 드라마틱 프리젠테이션상 43개, 쇼트 폼과 롱 폼 각 20개, 레트로 위고 11개 상이 주어졌다.가장 많은 상을 받은 개별 프랜차이즈로는 2000년대 닥터후(Doctor Who) 35개 후보 중 6개 후보작, 3개 후보작 중 3개 후보작, 4개 후보작 중 3개 후보작, 3개 후보작, 4개 후보작 중 3개 후보작의 트와일라잇존, 게임 오브 스르(Game of Thr) 등이 있다.롱 폼 중 3승, 쇼트 폼 5패, 숏 폼 6개 중 더 굿 플레이스 6개 중 4승.여러 개의 수상이나 후보에 오른 다른 쇼나 시리즈로는 8개의 후보작 중 2승을 기록한 오리지널 스타 트렉 시리즈가 있다. 넥스트 세대는 3개 후보 중 2개, 바빌론 5개 후보 중 2개 후보가 당선됐다.롱폼 12개 중 1승, 쇼트폼 1개 부문 후보에 오른 마블 시네마틱 유니버스, 뱀파이어 슬레이어 6개 중 1개 부문, 배틀스타 갈락티카(2004) 5개 부문 후보에 오른 뒤 7개 부문 후보에 오른 해리포터 부문은 크게 성공하지 못했다.힙합 그룹 클리핑의 멤버들은 뮤지컬 아티스트들 중 유일하게 2016년 앨범 《Flicency & Turny》와 2017년 앨범 《The Deep》[22][23]으로 두 번 후보에 올랐다.

1996년 월드콘을 시작으로 세계과학소설협회는 휴고상을 50년, 75년, 100년 전에 소급해서 수여할 수 있는 '레트로 후고스'라는 개념을 만들었다.레트로 후고스는 월드콘이 개최된 몇 년 동안만 상을 받을 수 있지만, 원래 어떤 상도 수여되지 않았다.[7][Note 1]1939년, 1941년, 1943년—1945년 상은 75년 후에 수여되었고, 나머지 세 개의 상은 50년 후에 수여되었다.[8]1946년과 1951년에는 부문이 아직 분할되지 않았기 때문에 최우수 극적 발표상, 1939년, 1943년, 1945년, 1954년에는 최우수 극적 발표상, 짧은 형식에 대한 상이 수여되었다.롱 폼 부문은 그 해에 상을 받을 만큼 충분한 후보작을 받지 못했다.1941년과 1944년 레트로 후고스는 롱 폼과 쇼트 폼을 모두 수여했다.[7]
