그 시계는 지름이 40cm인 팔세관 구를 가지고 있다. 구는 시계장치 메커니즘에 의해 작동되며, 주어진 시간에 하늘의 위치를 표시하도록 설계되어 있으며, 시간을 표시하고 키밍 벨로 그들의 통로를 표시하도록 설계되어 있다. 장치가 더 이상 작동하지 않는다.
이 시계는 고려대학교가 소유하고 있다. 조선에서 유일하게 남아있는 천문시계다.
이 시계는 제2차 세계대전 전 고려대학교를 설립한 부유한 사업가이자 정치가인 김성수씨가 골동품상으로부터 구입했다.[1] The historian of science Jeon Sang-Woon 전상운 全相運, who examined the device in 1962, assumed that it was the clockwork driven sphere known to have been made by Song Yiyeong 송이영 宋以穎 in 1669 for King Hyeonjong of Joseon 현종 顯宗, and the British historian of science Joseph Needham adopted this view, giving a detailed citation of the relevant Korean texts 그 시기부터, 그리고 메커니즘에 대한 상세한 설명.[2]
그러나 한국의 지도제작사 게리 레드야드는 1669년에 이르면 이 장치가 만들어졌을 수 없다고 주장했는데, 그 이유는 이 물체의 중심에 있는 지구 지도에 그 당시 한국에서는 알 수 없었던 남쪽 대륙의 일부에 대한 이름이 나타나 있기 때문이다.[3]
보다 최근에는 오상학(五商學)[4]이 1827년 왕자가 섭정하기 전인 익종( ik宗) 익jong(익180, 1809년~1830년) 왕세자 때인 19세기 초까지 그 사물이 연대를 할 수 있다고 주장해 왔다.
2007년 발행된 1만원권 지폐의 뒷면에 시계구의 이미지가 나타난다.[5]
