헬무트 하인리히 코에스터(Helmut Heinrich Koester, 1926년 12월 18일 ~ 2016년 1월 1일)는 하버드 신학대학원에서 신약성경과 초기 기독교를 전공한 독일 태생의 미국인 학자였다. 그의 연구는 주로 신약성서 해석, 초기 기독교의 역사, 초기 기독교 시대의 고고학 분야에 있었다.

인생

코에스터는 함부르크에서 태어났다. 그는 1945년 독일 마르부르크 대학의 루돌프 볼트만 밑에서 포로수용소에서 석방된 후 공부했다. 1954년에 논문을 제출한 뒤 1954년부터 1956년까지 하이델베르크 대학의 귄터 본캄 조교가 되었다. 코에스터는 1958년 하버드 신학교에서 가르치기 시작했고, 2000년 존 H. 모리슨 신학 연구 교수와 윈 종교사 교수가 되었다. 코에스터는 포트리스 프레스(미네아폴리스)가 펴낸 논평 시리즈 '헤르메니아: 성경에 대한 비판적이고 역사적인 논평'의 신약성서 편집위원 겸 의장을 맡았다. 성서문학회 회장(1991년)을 지냈고, SNTS(Studiorum NoviTenti Societas) 회원이었으며, 미국 예술과학원 회원으로 선출되었다. 코에스터는 자신의 행동에 대한 질책이나 책임을 받은 적은 없지만 여대생들을 성추행한 것으로도 널리 알려져 있었다. 코에스터는 루터교회의 서품된 목사였다. 1953년 기셀라 하라소위츠와 결혼하여 라인힐드, 알무트, 울리히, 하이코라는 네 명의 자녀를 두었다. 그에게는 크리스토퍼, 루카스, 알렉산더 등 3명의 손자가 있었다. 2016년 1월 1일 향년 89세로 별세했다.[2]

In his dissertation (published as Synoptische Überlieferung bei den Apostolischen Vätern, i.e. "Synoptic Tradition in the Apostolic Fathers"), Koester was able to demonstrate that much material in the so-called Apostolic Fathers that parallels elements in the Synoptic Gospels need not necessarily reflect dependence upon the written form of the Syno우리에게 알려진 팩트 이것은 매우 중요한 관찰이었고, 초기 기독교 복음 전통에 대한 모든 이후의 장학금도 고려해야 할 것이었다. 그의 수많은 후속 출판물들 중에서 그의 두 권짜리 신약성서 소개서는 표준 참고서가 되었다. 코에스터는 예수의 처녀 탄생의 내러티브를 헬레니즘 신화에 뿌리를 두고 있는 것으로 본다.[3]
