저널은 1978년 해리 스미스(노팅엄대) 편집장이 폴 고든 자비스(애버딘대), 데이비드 제닝스(리버풀대), 존 래번(던디대), 밥 캠벨(블랙웰 사이언티픽)[4] 등과 함께 설립했다.[3]
