NGC 299는 작은 마젤란 구름의[6] 본체에 있는 열린 별들의 군집이다. 즉, 근처의 왜소 은하계. 그것은 태양에서 20만 광년 정도 떨어진 투카나 남쪽 별자리에 위치해 있다.[2] 이 성단은 1834년 8월 12일 영국의 천문학자 존 허셜에 의해 발견되었다.[7]

이 성단은 약 2천 5백만 년 된 것으로 태양의 600배의 질량을 가지고 있다. 반경 24리(7.3pc)에 걸쳐 있다. 천문학자들이 헬륨보다 더 거대한 원소의 풍부함이라고 부르는 이 성단의 금속성은 태양과 거의 동일하다.[4] 그 성단은 가장 거대한 구성원의 별빛 바람이 원래의 먼지와 가스를 모두 분산시킬 만큼 충분히 오래되었다. 따라서 항성 형성은 중단되었다.[6] 2개의 은닉 이진수와 1개의 가능성 있는 Be 별은 확인되었지만, 클러스터에는 낮은 진도의 맥동 변수가 없다.[8]
