NGC 2859는 레오 마이너 별자리에서 약 8300만[3] 광년 떨어진 곳에 위치한 렌즈콩 은하다.형태학적 분류는 (R)SB(r)0이며+,[4] 여기서 S0+ 표기법은 가시적인 나선팔에 결여된 잘 정의된 물리적 구조를 나타낸다.'안새' 타입의 강한 바(B)를 가지고 있어, 끝부분을 향해 더 밝게 또는 더 넓게 자란다는 것을 의미한다.희미한 보조 막대는 주 막대와 거의 직각으로 위치한다.이러한 특징들은 분산되어 보이는 약한 내부 고리(r)에 둘러싸여 있다.은하의 바깥쪽 지역에는 동쪽을 따라 일련의 푸른색 띠를 포함하는 두드러진 분리된 고리(R)가 있다.[4]

중앙 초질량 블랙홀은 태양 질량의 1억5천5백만배로 추정된다.핵은 활동 징후가 없는 전환형 T2:[3]로 잠정 분류된다.[5]
