MML(Music Markup Language)은 음악 개체와 이벤트를 설명하기 위해 XML을 초기에 적용한 것이다.[1]MML은 IEEE 1599 표준과 같이 후기 음악 마크업 형식에서 흔히 사용되는 특징을 개척했다.이러한 특징들은 XML을 기반으로 사용하는 것, 음악적 사물이나 사건을 포괄적으로 기술하는 능력(전통 음악적 악보나 한 공연의 결정적인 사운드 레코딩에 기계적으로 판독할 수 있는 형식을 제공하는 것과는 대조), 그리고 이 포괄적인 정보를 모듈로 나누는 것(종종 흔히 말함)을 포함한다.메타데이터, 가사, 표기법, 소리 및 성능에 대한 별도의 모듈 포함.[2][3][4][5]MML은 문자 음절, 음절, 음절, 전통 음악 표기법, 음절, 리듬 간의 관계를 유연하고 확장 가능한 방식으로 진술할 수 있도록 한다.[6]: 222–223
