이와암어는 명확하게 연관된 두 개의 언어가 있는 작은 가족이다.[1]
그들은 일반적으로 파푸아 뉴기니의 북부 세피크어족에 분류된다; 말콤 로스는 그들을 그 가족의 상부 세피크족에 둔다.
이와암어는 동세피크 지방의 극서쪽 끝, 상세피크 강의 둑을 따라 파푸아 뉴기니에서 쓰이며, 왼쪽 5월 언어의 바로 서쪽에 위치한다.
