물범과의 바이칼 물범(Pusa sibirica)기각류의 세계의 유일한 담수 종만이 분포는 파도가 전북 주변에서 발견된다 Phocinae(구어체에서는"북부 바다 표범"으로 알려져)은 subfamily.[1]다른phocid 바다 표범과 그것들을 구별하게 잘 발달된 발톱들의 앞 뒤 지느러미에 존재한다.[2][3]그 Phocinae 3현존하는 종족으로: 나뉜다.Erignathini(유일한 현존Bearded 실 긴 턱수염 물범에 의해 나타나는), Cystophorini( 다른 현존하는 모노 타이프의 부족 Hooded 바다 표범 Cystophora cristata가 나타내는), 그리고 Phocini( 다른 남은 생물 종의 나머지 부분에 그 subfamily에 나타나).반면 부족 Phocini에서 종 32염색체를 가진 둘 다 Erignathini과 Cystophorini 구성원은 34의 염색체가 있다.[2]
