원래 상인들과 상인 은행가들의 회사로 설립된 바링스는 1762년 런던에서 결성되었다.[1]

1950년대에 바링스는 자산 관리의 잠재력을 깨닫고 1955년에 자체 투자 부서를 설립했다.[10][11]고객들은 기업고객, 국가연결기관, 연기금 및 자선기관이었다.1970년대에 바링스는 극동, 북미, 유럽에 사무실을 두고 이 사업을 국제적으로 확장했다.[12]1989년, 바링스는 런던에 본사를 둔 바링 자산 관리 유한회사 내의 모든 자산 관리 활동을 통합하였다.[13]1995년, 영국에서 가장 오래된 투자은행인 바링스 은행은 싱가포르에서 6년 반 동안 수감되었던 싱가포르의 수석 파생상품 거래자인 닉 리슨의 무단 거래로 붕괴되었다.[14]그 후 네덜란드 은행인 ING 그룹이 1파운드에 사들였다.[15]

2016년 9월 매스무투알은 밥슨캐피털매니지먼트, 우드크릭캐피털매니지먼트, 코너스톤부동산어드바이저, 바링자산매니지먼트를 합병해 바링스를 결성했다.[6]
