애비 카터는 켄터키주 베르사유에서 존 켐프 굿로와 메리 루크레티아 굿로이의 딸로 태어났다.그녀의 어머니는 클럽우먼이었고,[2] 그녀의 아버지는 변호사와 판사였다.[3]1898년 웰즐리 칼리지([4][5]Wellesley College)를 졸업하고 대학 노래집("Mona Lisa"와 "Le Pays du Tendre")[6]에 수록된 두 곡의 가사를 썼다.대학 졸업 후 그녀는 프랑스어 실력을 향상시키기 위해 프랑스로 갔다.[7]
