워섬은 1974년 이후 대부분의 설문조사에서 일반사회조사(GSS) 항목으로 포함된 10개 항목의 어휘시험이다.[1] 그 시험의 각 항목들은 매우 쉬운 것에서부터 매우 어려운 것까지 다양하다. 사회·행동과학 분야의 연구에 널리 쓰인다.[2] 매년 약 1,000명의 사람들이 이것을 GSS의 일부로 포함하고 있다.[3] 행정부는 응답자들에게 10개의 단어가 포함된 카드를 보여준 다음 다섯 개의 단어 중에서 각각의 동의어를 찾도록 요구하는 것을 포함한다.[4] 대부분의 연구자들은 시험의 각 항목이 동일한 가중치를 가질 수 있다고 암묵적으로 가정했지만, 각 단어에 대한 분산을 개별적으로 고려함으로써 그 타당성을 향상시킬 수 있다.[5]
