월리스 D. "월리스" 맥레이(McRay, 1936년 2월 26일 출생)[1]는 미국의 목장가, 카우보이, 카우보이 시인, 철학자다.그는 몬태나주 로즈버드 남쪽 로즈버드 크릭에 있는 3만 에이커(120km2)의 로커 식스 우즈 코퍼레이션 목장을 운영하고 있다) 목장을 운영하고 있다.

전기

맥레이는 3대 목장인으로 그의 가족은 1885년부터 몬태나 남동부에서 소와 양을 키웠다.[2]

그는 인근 몬태나주 콜스트립에 있는 초등학교와 고등학교를 다녔다.1958년 몬태나 주립대학교 동물학과 화학과를 졸업했다.[3]대학 졸업 후, 그는 미국 해군에 의해 임관되었고 대서양과 지중해 함대에서 복무했다.1960년 아버지의 죽음 이후 맥레이는 그의 아내 루스 헤이스와 함께 몬타나로 돌아와 목축업을 이어받았다.[2]

경력

맥레이는 4살 때 여동생들이 참석한 원룸 스쿨하우스에서 자신의 첫 시를 읊었던 기억이 있다.이후 환경보호 등 사회적 관심사는 물론 유머러스하면서도 로맨틱한 주제를 다룬 시 100여 편을 출간했다.[4]

시인으로서 맥래는 '전국 카우보이 시인 모임의 혼화제'로 여겨지고 있으며, '내부적으로 그의 시 '반란'으로 알려져 있다.[3]2015년 현재 맥레이는 엘코 카우보이 시 모임 때마다 초청연주자로 활동하고 있다.[5]

미국 언론인 찰스 쿠랄트는 그의 저서 찰스 쿠랄트의 아메리카에서 작은 지역사회의 땅과 카우보이 삶의 방식을 보존하려는 맥래의 노력에 대해 논한다.[6]시 "내재가치의 일들"은 쿠랄트 책의 인터뷰와 함께 등장한다.맥레이는 미국 TV 뉴스매거진 시리즈 60 Minutes의[5] 한 코너의 주제가 되었고, 1999년 PBS 시리즈 P.O.V.의 에피소드에서 그의 시를 읽었다.[7]그의 시는 많은 카우보이 시집에 수록되어 있다.[8]게다가, 맥래는 2000년에 출판된 카우보이 시집에 이 서문을 썼다.[9]
