폼페이우스는 오렌지 왕자인 사일런트 윌리엄의 개였다.스페인인에 반대하는 운동 중, 윌리엄의 개 폼페이우스는 암살 시도를 좌절시켰다.어느 날 밤 프랑스 허미니에서 왕자가 자는 동안 암살자들이 그의 텐트를 향해 살금살금 다가갔다.폼페이우스는 그들의 말을 듣고 주인에게 경고하기 위해 짖고 긁기 시작했고, 마침내 주인 얼굴에 뛰어올라 임박한 위험을 알렸다.[1][2]

이 전설에서 개의 품종에 대한 견해가 달랐다.어떤 사람들은 개를 퍼그의 친척이라고 부르지만, 다른 사람들은 폼페이우스가 구이케르혼드제였다고 믿는다.[4][5][6][7]델프트의 기념비에 새겨진 개는 납작한 얼굴을[8] 가지고 있지 않으며, 1873년에 미국 법원에서 "스페인엘"로 언급되었다.[9]
