다극성 호수는 너무 얕아서 열성층화가 안 되는 홀로믹틱 호수로, 빙하가 없는 기간 내내 물이 위에서 아래로 섞일 수 있다. 폴리믹스 호수는 차가운 폴리믹스호(즉, 겨울에 얼음이 덮인 호수)와 따뜻한 폴리믹스호(즉, 겨울에 얼음 덮개가 발달하지 않는 지역의 폴리믹스호)로 나눌 수 있다.[1] 그러한 호수는 평균적으로 잘 혼합되어 있는 반면, 바람이 약한 기간에는 약한 층화와 순간적인 층화가 종종 발생할 수 있다.[2][3]
