존 드렉셀은 코네티컷 주 스탬포드에서 태어났다. 코네티컷 대학교를 졸업하고 영국 리즈 대학교에서 영어 석사 학위를 받고 있는데, 그의 논문 고문은 제프리 힐이었다. 이후 옥스퍼드 대학 출판부와 뉴욕시의 다른 출판사에서 편집자로 일했으며, 20세기 The Factions On File 백과사전의 총편집장을 역임했다.[1]
