JasPer는 1997년 Image Power Inc.와 British Columbia University에서 시작된 JPEG-2000 Part-1 표준(즉 ISO/IEC 15444-1)에 명시된 코덱의 참조 구현을 위한 컴퓨터 소프트웨어 프로젝트다.[3]그것은 C 라이브러리와 코덱 테스트에 유용한 몇몇 샘플 어플리케이션으로 구성되어 있다.

2004년에 실시된 일련의 객관적인 JPEG-2000-압축 품질 테스트에서 "JasPer가 최고의 코덱이었고, IrfanView와 Kakadu가 밀접하게 그 뒤를 이었다."[8]그러나 Jasper는 성능이 아닌 참조용으로 설계되었기 때문에 JPEG-2000 코덱의 가장 느린 구현 중 하나로 남아 있다.

어원

'JasPer'라는 명칭은 캐나다의 재스퍼 국립공원과 동시적으로 함축되어 있으며, 반정밀 원석, 재스퍼, JP를 JPEG-2000 표준의 약자로 하고 있다.[9]
