버킹엄은 2019년 3월 12일 대학 입학금 수뢰사건에 가담한 혐의로 체포됐다.[20][21][22][3]아들의 지식이나 동의 없이 행동한 버킹엄은 대학 상담 회사인 키 월드와이드 재단에 5만 달러를 기부하여 아들을 대신하여 대리인이 ACT를 받도록 주선했다.버킹엄은 자신이 실제로 시험을 봤다고 믿게 하기 위해 감독관에게 아들의 글 샘플을 제공했고, 아들이 ACT 연습을 하도록 했다.[23][24][25]4월에 버킹엄은 유죄를 인정하기로 동의했다.[26][27]
