허셜 메달은 왕립천문학회(RAS)가 '관측천체물리학 분야에서 탁월한 공적을 세운 연구'로 수여하는 상이다. 이 상은 젊은 과학자들이 이 상의 후보가 될 수 있도록 한 작품에 수여된다.[1] 그것은 RAS의 초대 대통령인 윌리엄 허셜의 이름을 따서 지어졌다.[3] 이 메달은 1974년에 처음 수여되었다. 1974년부터 2004년까지 허셜 메달이 3년마다 수여되었다. 2004년부터는 그 빈도가 2년으로 단축되었고 2012년부터는 매년 수여될 것이다. 이 메달은 1977년과 1986년에 두 번 공유되었다. 총 25명(남자 23명, 여자 2명)에게 23회 수상했으며, 대부분 영국 출신이다.[2][4]
