인생
메릴랜드에서 태어나 2년 동안 메릴랜드 대학에서 공부했다.그는 제7회 손프레스와 문학잡지 블라인드 골목(Blind Balleges)을 창간했다.그는 브라운 대학교에서 학사 학위를 받고, 엑셀시오르 대학교에서 학사 학위를 받았다.풀브라이트 학자로 국립대만대와 타이베이예술대학에서 가르쳤으며, 동굴카넴 재단의 연례 수련회에서 교직원을 지냈다.또 동굴카넴 재단의 장로로 가장 먼저 이름을 올렸다.그는 또한 대만의 타이베이 어학원에서 중국어를 공부했다.[2]
시몬스 칼리지에서 가르치고 있으며, 조라 닐 허스턴 문학센터 소장을 맡고 있다.[3]그는 시몬스 국제 한문회의 회장을 맡고 있다.[2]나이지리아 극작가 테스 온위메는 그에게 '오라클'이라는 뜻의 이보 이름 '아파아'를, 퍼낭 칭시 박사는 그에게 '웨이옌'이라는 중국 이름을 붙여주었다.[4]
