웹 카툰 작가들의 초이스 어워드(WCA)는 기성 웹카툰 작가들이 우수 웹코미컬을 선정해 시상하는 상이다. 이 상은 2001년과 2008년 사이에 열렸으며 2005년 웹툰에 관한 뉴욕타임스 칼럼에서 언급되었고 [1]사서들을 위한 도구로 언급되어 왔다.[2]

역사

WCCA는 온라인 웹툰에서 활동하는 크리에이터에게만 의결권이 부여되는 동종업계 인정의 한 형태를 나타낸다.[3] 2007년 메가콘이 처음으로 라이브 프레젠테이션을 한다고 발표했음에도 불구하고, 수상자들은 그들의 사이트에 대한 개인화된 웹 배너를 받는다.[1][4] 2003년, 2005년, 2006년, 이 상들은 코믹 연재 형식으로 묘사되고 다수의 창작자들이 참여한 온라인 시상식에서 수여되었다.[3]

에릭 몬스터 밀리킨 로맨스 만화 논란

2006년 유권자들은 에릭 밀리킨의 공포/로맨스 코믹(당시 '태아X'로 불렸던 에릭 몬스터 밀리킨)을 '우수한 로맨스 코믹'상 최종 후보 5명 중 한 명으로 선정했지만, 시상 집행위원회에서 탈락했다. WCCA 위원회는 "Foetus-X의 '우수한 로맨스 코믹'에 대한 [sic] 지명은 그들의 이야기, 설정, 캐릭터에서 사랑과 로맨스의 이슈를 더하는 '우수한 로맨스 코믹' 범주의 장르 기준에 부합하지 않는다"[10]고 썼다.[11] 태아X는 "어떤 식으로든 유권자의 선택을 제한하고 싶지 않다"는 수상위원회의 입장에도 불구하고 부적격 판정을 받았다. 우리가 결과를 통제함으로써 이 상들을 '물타기'하지 않는 것이 매우 중요했다..."[12]

이 같은 움직임은 코미톡스 출판사 자비아 크렉세스가 "몇 년 전 태아X 후보 지명을 포기한 것은 실수였으며, 정의상 WCA는 표에 근거해야 하며, 제정된 집행위원회처럼 어떤 종류의 '베토'도 있어서는 안 되었다"고 말하는 등 원색적인 비난을 받았다.[13] 웹스나크 블로거 에릭 번즈는 "웹카툰 작가들에게 주어진 분야에서 최고라고 생각하는 사람을 지명해 달라고 요청할 생각이라면, 그들에 동의하지 않기 때문에 지명을 철회하게 된다"고 불평했다. 그럼 정확히 요점이 뭐야?"[14]

2007년 밀리킨의 만화는 다시 '우수한 로맨틱 코믹' 후보에 올랐지만 집행위원회로부터 실격은 받지 못했다.[15] 2008년 집행위원회는 더 이상의 논란을 피하기 위해 로맨스 만화상과 다른 모든 장르상 부문을 삭제하는 데까지 갔다.[16]

WCCA는 수많은 범주를 가지고 있었다. 가장 많은 상을 받은 연재만화는 맥홀이 9개로 가장 많고, 이어서 채핑블록과 페리 성경 펠로우십이 8개로, 페니 아케이드와 백작 유어 썸이 각각 7개로 뒤를 이었다.
