월터 스핑크

Walter Spink

발터 M. 스핑크(Walter M. Spink, 1928년 2월 16일 ~ 2019년 11월 23일)는 미국의 미술사학자로, 인도에서 불교 미술에 대한 폭넓은 연구로 가장 잘 알려져 있으며, 특히 유네스코 세계문화유산인 아잔타 동굴에 대한 연구로 유명하다. 아잔타 동굴에 대한 그의 연구에 대해 학자들은 그의 사상이 "현장의 역사를 혁명화했다"[1]고 인정했다. 그는 미시간 대학의 앤아버 미술사 교수였다.[2][3]

전기

스핑크는 매사추세츠 주 우스터에서 태어나 암허스트 대학에 진학하여 철학 및 서양 미술사를 공부하여 1949년에 졸업하였다. 그 후 그는 인도 미술을 탐구한 최초의 서양 미술사학자 중 한 명인 벤자민 롤랜드의 영향을 받아 인도 미술에 이끌리게 된 하버드 대학에 진학했다. 스핑크는 하버드에서 1954년 "안드라 시대의 록컷 기념물"에 MA를 받았고 박사학위를 받았다.[1] 1956년부터 1961년까지 브란데이스 대학에서 가르쳤고, 이후 미시건 대학교에 입학하여 2000년 은퇴할 때까지 남아 있었다.[4]

아잔타 동굴 공사
