표범무늬는 특히 동물의 털코트나 피부에서 얼룩무늬가 있는 무늬지만 식물이나 직물에서 얼룩무늬를 묘사할 수도 있다.[1][2] 이 용어는 표범고양이의 검은색과 금색 얼룩무늬 코트를 가리키지만,[3] 피부나 다른 동물의 털코트에 무작위로 얼룩이 생기는 많은 색깔 조합을 묘사하는 데 사용된다. 표범이라고 불리는 색채 무늬를 가진 동물의 예로는 판테라속, 표범개구리, 애팔루사와 크나브리스터 품종의 '레오퍼드' 얼룩무늬, 표범물범, 거대한 표범나방과 같은 곤충, 표범 더터, 표범상어, 표범장어 등의 어종이 있다.[4] 이 용어를 사용하는 식물의 예로는 표범백합, 표범꽃 등이 있다.[5]

Lp(leopard complex) 유전자는 말의 표범색 무늬를 담당하는데,[6][7] 이 유전자는 점박이코트 색뿐만 아니라 피부의 동요, 눈가의 하얀 쇄골, 줄무늬 발굽 등을 유발한다. Lp 유전자를 가진 말들은 곳곳에서 발견되거나 다양한 패턴의 점들이 집중되어 있을 수 있다.
