리즈 코얀은 리즈 마을의 이름을 따서 지어졌으며, 이 품종은 터키의 북동 흑해 지역에 있는 리즈와 오르두 주 전역에서 발견된다.[2][3]이 품종은 단단한 몸과 튼튼한 다리를 가진 Kars 개와 닮았고, 개들은 약 70 센티미터(28인치)의 체격이고, 비트들은 1~2 센티미터(0.39–0.79인치)의 더 짧으며, 회색은 가장 흔하지만, 양색상의 예가 알려져 있다.[2][3]
