마시 보더즈(1973년 7월 19일~2015년 8월 24일)는 세계무역센터에 위치한 지점의 뱅크오브아메리카에서 일하다가 2001년 9월 11일 알카에다 테러 이후 붕괴(WTC1, WTC2, WTC7)에서 살아남은 미국의 법률 조력자였다.[1]

아겐스 프랑스 프레세의 사진작가인 스탠 혼다는 건물 붕괴로 생긴 먼지로 완전히 뒤덮인 보더스의 모습을 포착했고, 이후 '아이콘틱([2]iconic)'으로 널리 묘사되었다. 이 이미지는 너무 잘 알려지고 널리 배포되어 보더스는 "먼지 레이디"로 알려지게 되었다.

개인 임팩트

뉴저지 주 베이욘에 거주하는 28세의 보더스는 공격 당시 노스타워 내부 81층에서 작업을 하고 있었다.[3] 보더스는 그녀가 그 공격의 트라우마에서 결코 회복되지 않았다고 말했다. 우울증은 파트너와의 결별, 자녀 양육권 상실, 술과 마약 중독으로 이어졌다. 보더스는 오사마 빈 라덴의 사망 소식을 알게 된 것이 그녀의 회복과 음주 복귀의 중요한 사건이라고 말했다. 보더스는 그녀가 이 상징적인 사진에서 입었던 옷을 보존하고 있었다.[4][5]

암 진단 및 사망

보더스는 2014년 8월 위암 판정을 받았다.[6] 보더스의 암으로 인해 그녀는 아직 수술을 받지 않았고 추가적인 화학요법이 필요했음에도 불구하고 19만 달러의 빚을 지게 되었다.[6] 보더스는 그녀가 처방전을 받을 여유조차 없었다고 말했다. 그는 세계무역센터가 붕괴될 때 노출된 독성 먼지에 의해 암이 발생했다고 주장하면서 "나는 어떤 질병도 앓지 않았기 때문에 그것을 확실히 믿는다. 고혈압, 고콜레스테롤, 당뇨병도 없고." 보더스는 2015년 8월 24일 암으로 사망했다.[4][7]
