도널드 알렉산더 다운스(Donald Alexander Downs, 1948년 12월 2일 출생)는 수정헌법 제1조에 관한 연구로 유명한 위스콘신 매디슨 대학의 미국 정치학 교수다.[1]

교육

다운스는 코넬 대학교에서 학사 학위를 받았고 버클리 캘리포니아 대학교에서 박사 학위를 받았다.[2]

경력

다운스는 미시간 대학교와 노트르담 대학교에서 가르쳤으며 현재 UW 매디슨 대학교 정치학, 법률 및 저널리즘 교수, 독립 연구소 연구원으로 재직 중이다.다운스는 최근 몇 년간 학문적 자유에 대한 특별한 관심을 가지고, 언론의 자유에서 중앙의 논쟁의 기초가 되는 정치에 관한 많은 학술적 기사와 책을 출판했다.

다운스는 학술자유권리위원회(CAFAR)의 공동 창립자로 위스콘신대-매디슨대 등에서 학문의 자유를 옹호하며 공개적으로 발언하는 경우가 많다.

다운스는 2010년 알렉산더 메이클존 UW 매디슨 정치학 교수로 임명되었다.그는 또한 그 대학의 법학과 언론학과 부속 교수다.

2012년, 다운스의 책 (Ilia Murtazashvili 공동저자) Arms and the University: 군대 주둔과 비군사학생 시민교육.[3]이 책은 군과 고등교육의 역사적, 현재적 관계를 탐구하며, ROTC, 군사역사과정, 전략안보학 등의 형태로 군을 적절하게 주둔시키면 모든 학생의 자유시민교육과 시민교육이 확대되고, 대학의 지적 지평을 넓힌다고 주장한다.

다운스는 자유민주주의 연구를 위한 위스콘신 센터의 공동 설립자 겸 현재 이사다.[4]센터는 자유사회의 중심 원칙, 정책, 실천에 대한 이해와 비판적 평가, 캠퍼스 내 진정한 지적 다양성 증진에 헌신하고 있다.

다운스는 UW-Madison의 알렉산더 해밀턴 소사이어티 학생부의 교수 고문이다.해밀턴 소사이어티는 중요한 외교정책과 국가안보 문제를 논의하고 토론하는 데 전념하는 국가 학생 단체로, 미국이 국제 문제에서 건설적인 역할을 할 수 있는 방법에 대해 생각한다.

그는 UW 매디슨 대학의 학생 신문인 오소리 헤럴드의 이사회에서 투표하지 않는 고문을 맡고 있다.
