악사루스 속은 홀로극, 네오트로픽스, 오스트랄라시아의 기록과 함께 널리 분포되어 있다.[1][2]현재 북극 근방에 5종이 묘사되어 있다.[3]Xenochioromus의 하위 유전자 (Anceus)로 세워졌고,[4] 이후 Axarus는 이름을 바꾸었고 일반적인 지위로 승격되었다.[5]미국 동부의 코네티컷 강에는 현재 둘 다 원치 않는 두 종의 악사루스가 살고 있는 지역적으로 밀집되어 있는 개체수가 살고 있다.이러한 개체수는 특정한 유충 서식지(점토와 때로는 썩는 나무)에 제한되어 있기 때문에 강에 있는 개체들 사이에 유전적 구조가 존재한다는 점에서 흥미롭다.[6]코네티컷 강 종은 또한 매우 잘 발달된 폴리테네 염색체를 가지고 있고 또한 높은 수준의 역전성 폴리모르페이스를 유지하고 있다는 점에서 또한 주목할 만하다.[7][8]
