야오상마니푸르에서 람다월 보름(2~3월)을 시작으로 봄에 5일간 기념하는 축제다. 야오상은 메이티족의 토착 전통이다.[1] 마니푸르에서 가장 중요한 축제로 여겨진다.[2] 홀리처럼, 마니푸르의 힌두교 마이티도 이 축제 동안 색깔을 가지고 논다.

설명

야오상은 모든 마을에서 해가 진 직후에 야오상 메이 타바(Yaosang Mei taba), 즉 '밀짚 오두막의 불타기'와 함께 시작된다. 그러자 아이들은 집집마다 나카퉁이라고 불리는 금전적 기부를 요청한다. 둘째 날에는 마니푸르 임팔동구 고빈다게 사원에서 지역 밴드 그룹들이 상커탄을 공연한다. 둘째, 셋째 날에는 여자아이들이 나카퉁을 위해 친척집에 가고, 돈을 모으기 위해 밧줄로 길을 막는다. 넷째와 다섯째 날에는 사람들이 서로에게 물을 붓거나 튀긴다.줄다리기와 축구와 같은 많은 스포츠 경기들도 이 기회에 조직된다.이것 외에도 지역 별미들은 축제 기간 동안 이웃들과 함께 공유된다.[3]

이 축제의 또 다른 특징은 타발 종바이다. 각지에서 온 수컷들이 축제 현장에 와서 암컷들과 손을 잡고 원을 그리며 춤을 출 것이다. 2016년 3월 23~24일 발생했다.[4]

현지인들은 또한 이 흥겨운 축제를 기념하기 위해 잔치를 벌인다. 근래에는 스포츠를 향한 축제의 기운을 풀뿌리 차원에서 인재를 찾아내는 풍조가 나타났는데, 이는 마이트리스의 풍부한 스포츠 정신에 부합한다.[5]
