소형 리프트 발사체
Small-lift launch vehicle소형 상승발사체는 로켓 궤도발사체로 탑재된 페이로드의 최대 2,000kg(4,400lb) (NASA 분류 기준) 또는 최대 5,000kg (11,000lb)(ROSOSMOS 분류 기준)[1]을 낮은 지구궤도(LEO)로 끌어올릴 수 있다.다음으로 큰 범주는 중형 리프트 발사 차량으로 구성된다.[2]
최초의 소형 리프트 발사체는 소련이 발사한 스푸트니크 로켓으로, 이는 R-7 세묘카 ICBM에서 파생된 것이다.1957년 10월 4일, 스푸트니크 로켓은 세계 최초의 위성 발사를 수행하는데 사용되어 스푸트니크 1호 위성을 낮은 지구 궤도에 올려놓았다.[3][4][5]NASA는 뱅가드 로켓을 발사하려고 시도하면서 대응했다.[6][7]그러나 1958년 1월 31일 주노 1호 로켓을 이용한 익스플로러 1호 위성 발사가 NASA 최초의 성공적인 궤도 발사가 되면서 뱅가드 TV3 발사 시도는 실패했다.뱅가드 1호 임무는 NASA 궤도 발사 두 번째 성공이었다.이것이 우주 경쟁의 시작이었다.[8][9]
1950년대 후반부터 소형 리프트 발사체들이 우주에 탑재된 탑재체를 계속 발사하고 있다.중형발사체, 중형발사체, 초대형 중형발사체 등도 광범위하게 개발됐지만 소형발사체를 완전히 대체할 수는 없었다.소형 발사 차량은 일부 우주선의 요구 조건을 충족시킬 수 있으며, 또한 대형 발사체보다 비용이 적게 들 수도 있다.[citation needed]
