숀 마이클 스파이서[2](1971년 9월 23일생)[3]는 미국 정치 보좌관 출신으로 2017년 도널드 트럼프 대통령 시절 제30대 백악관 언론담당 비서와 백악관 커뮤니케이션 국장을 지냈다.스파이서 대변인은 2011년부터 2017년까지 공화당 전국위원회 통신국장, 2015년부터 2017년까지 수석전략가로 활동했다.[4]

스파이서 대변인은 백악관 언론담당 비서로 재직하면서 논란이 되고 거짓된 여러 가지 공개성명을 했고,[5][6][7] 백악관 기자단과 논쟁적인 관계를 발전시켰다.[8][9][10]이런 사례는 트럼프 대통령 취임 다음 날인 2017년 1월 21일 처음 발생했다.스파이서 대변인은 트럼프 대통령의 취임식장에 모인 인파가 이 같은 행사에서 역대 최대 규모였고 언론이 의도적으로 관중 수를 과소평가했다는 주장을 되풀이했다.[11][12][13]이 발언이 널리 비판받자 켈리앤 콘웨이 트럼프 보좌관은 스파이서 장관이 취임식 참석번호와 관련해 이른바 '대안적 사실'을 제시했다고 밝혔다.[14]

스파이서 대변인은 8월 31일까지 불특정직으로 백악관에 머물렀지만 2017년 7월 21일 백악관 대변인직을 사임했다.[15][16][17]스파이서 대변인은 백악관을 떠난 뒤 회고록 '더 브리핑: 정치, 언론, 대통령'을 출간하고 '별과 함께 춤을' 시즌 28에 참가자로 출연해 뉴스맥스 TV에서 정치 토크쇼를 진행하기 시작했다.[18][19]

초년기

스파이서 대변인은 캐스린 (née 그로스만)과 마이클 윌리엄 스파이서 (1944–2016)의 아들이다.[20]스피커스 부부는 숀이 뉴욕 맨해셋의 노스쇼어 병원에서 태어났을 때 워싱턴 포트에서 살고 있었다.[3][21]스파이서 형사는 로드 아일랜드의 이스트베이 지역에서 자랐다.[22]그의 아버지는 보험대리인이었고 어머니는 브라운대 동아시아학과 학과장이었다.[2][23][24]

트럼프 행정부 언론담당 비서

2016년 12월 22일 스파이서 대변인은 도널드 트럼프 백악관 대변인에 임명됐다.[49]12월 24일에는 제이슨 밀러의 갑작스럽고 예상치 못한 사임으로 트럼프 행정부의 통신부장에 임명되기도 했다.[50]

2017년 4월 폴리티코/모닝컨설팅 여론조사에 따르면 스파이서 대변인은 전국적인 지명인식이 60%로 다른 백악관 직원들과 이전 언론비서관들보다 훨씬 높았다.[51]

언론에 첫 성명서명

스파이서 대변인은 첫 언론 성명을 발표했다.

스파이서 대변인은 취임식 다음날이자 첫 공식 기자회견을 이틀 앞둔 2017년 1월 21일 언론에 부정적 비판 성명을 내고 "트럼프 대통령의 취임식 인파 규모를 과소평가했다"고 밝혔다.그는 이 시상식이 "직접 그리고 전 세계에서 취임식을 목격한 역대 최대 관객들을 끌어 모았다"고 주장했다.그러나 많은 소식통이 즉시 지적했듯이, 그 주장은 거짓이었다.[52][53]

트럼프 팀은 스파이서 대변인의 진술을 변호했다.리인스 프리버스 백악관 비서실장은 스파이서 보좌관의 회담 목적은 스파이서 보좌관이 말하는 '언론에서의 정직성'과 '대통령 위임에 대한 의지'[62]를 외치기 위한 것이라고 밝혔다.트럼프의 선거전략가 겸 카운슬러인 켈리앤 콘웨이는 NBC 척 토드와의 인터뷰에서 트럼프의 취임식 군중 수는 증명되거나 수량화될 수 없으며, 언론 담당 장관이 단순히 '대안적 사실'[63]을 제시하고 있다고 말했다.토드는 이에 대해 "대체적인 사실은 사실이 아니다.그것들은 거짓이다."[64]

첫 공식 기자회견

이틀 뒤인 2017년 1월 23일 스파이서 대변인은 첫 공식 백악관 기자회견을 열고 기자들의 질문을 받았다.[65][66]스파이서 대변인은 취임식 참석에 대한 질문을 받았을 때, 시청자에 대한 그의 정의는 또한 소셜 미디어뿐만 아니라 텔레비전에서 이 행사를 지켜본 개인들도 포함시켰다고 말했다.그는 온라인 시청률이 "수백만 명"에 있었을 것이라고 주장했다.[67]

스파이서 대변인의 주장은 취임식을 CNN 홈페이지에 스트리밍하기 시작한 1690만 명의 보고된 수치를 근거로 했다.1690만 개천에는 개천을 시작한 뒤 떠난 사람들이 포함돼 있어 이런 주장이 비판받고 있다.[68]

2017년 2월 7일 CNN은 "도널드 트럼프 대통령이 스파이서 보좌관의 정권 첫 2주 동안의 성과에 실망하고 있다"고 보도했다.트럼프 대통령은 또 리인스 프리버스 백악관 비서실장이 스파이서 보좌관을 추천한 것에 대해 화가 났다고 방송은 전했다.트럼프 대통령은 "매일 후회하며 프리버스에게 책임을 전가한다"고 CNN에 전했다.[69][70]임시 커뮤니케이션 감독으로서의 그의 역할은 2017년 3월 6일 마이클 더블케가 채웠다.[71]

히틀러-아사드 논란

2017년 4월 11일 스파이서 대변인은 칸 샤이 비구니 화학 공격과 관련해 성명을 발표했다.그는 러시아가 시리아 정부를 지지해서는 안 된다고 말했으며, 제2차 세계대전 당시 "화학무기 사용에 침몰하지도 않은 히틀러처럼 비열한 사람이 있었다"[72][73]고 논평하기도 했다.

특히 발언 시기가 유대인의 명절인 유월절과 겹친다는 점에서 그의 발언은 비판의 목소리가 높았다.[74]스파이서 대변인은 나중에 히틀러가 홀로코스트 동안 치명적인 가스를 사용했다는 사실을 부인하려는 것이 아니라 아사드가 인구센터에 폭탄을 투하한 방법과 히틀러가 어떻게 그 가스를 사용했는지 비교하려는 것이라고 분명히 밝혔다.[75]사퇴 요구가 나오는 가운데 스파이서 대변인은 다음날 사과했다.[74][76]

스파이서 대변인은 백악관 대변인으로서 백악관 기자단과 논쟁을 벌였다.[8][9][10]백악관은 2017년 2월 BBC, CNN, 뉴욕타임스, 로스앤젤레스 타임스, 폴리티코 등 여러 뉴스 매체를 스파이서와의 오프 카메라 브리핑(또는 '개글')에서 선별적으로 차단해 관련 매체와 백악관 출입기자협회의 강력한 반발을 샀다.[77][78][79]워싱턴포스트는 이 같은 보도 금지 조치는 "트럼프 대통령이 언론과의 전쟁을 격화하고 있는 가운데 나온 보기 드물고 놀라운 조치"[79]라고 썼다.AP통신과 타임지 기자들은 브리핑에 응했지만 다른 기자들의 배제에 반발해 불참을 선택했다.[78][79]

트위터 소송 피고인

2017년 7월 11일 스파이서 대변인은 도널드 트럼프, 댄 스카비노(백악관 소셜미디어국장)와 함께 미국 맨해튼 연방법원 콜롬비아대 기사제일 수정연구소에 제소됐다.그 소송, 나이트 퍼스트 수정 연구소 대 대. 트럼프 측은 트럼프 대통령과 백악관 관계자들이 일부 사용자들의 트럼프 트위터 콘텐츠 접근을 차단해 수정헌법 1조를 위반했다고 주장하고 있다.[80]

체념

스파이서 대변인은 몇 달 만에 미국 5대 뉴스 방송사인 ABC뉴스, CBS뉴스, CNN, 폭스뉴스, NBC뉴스 중 어느 한 곳에서든 출연 계약을 거절당한 것으로 알려졌다.[83]
