사모아 통일
Samoan unification
사모아(이전에 서사모아로 알려졌던 독립국가)와 미국령 사모아(미국령 동사모아라고도 한다)의 정치적 결합은 20세기 전반 삼부협약에 따라 현재의 지위가 확립된 이후, 그리고 훨씬 이전까지 제안되어 왔다.: 1919년 서부 사모아는 미국 사모아와 단결하고 싶은 욕구를 표현했다. 양국의 사모아인들은 민족성과 문화를 공유한다.[1] 그러나 그들의 섬들은 정치적으로 분리되어 있다. 서부 섬들은 1920~1946년 영국 행정부와 1946년 뉴질랜드 행정부에 의해 서부 사모아 신탁 지역으로 편입되었다. 사모안간 협의회는 1955년 두 사람의 협력을 증진하기 위해 설립되었다.[2] 1953년부터 1956년까지 아메리칸사모아 주지사였던 리처드 배렛 로우는 재임 중 서부사모아와의 통일은 위원회에서 논의되지 않기로 결정되었다고 말했다.[3] 1969년 미국 사모아의 정치위원회는 서부 사모아와의 통일 제안을 거부했다.[4]
통일에 대한 정서와 반대하는 정서는 서로 다른 정도로 존재한다.[5] 그럼에도 불구하고, 일부 서양의 사모아 정치 지도자들은 단일화에 찬성하거나 서부 사모아를 미국의 신뢰 영토로 만들 것을 주장해왔다.[6] 미국령 사모아 주민들은 사모아 민족적 정체성이 강하지만 그들 사이에서 서부 사모아와의 독립이나 통일을 찬성하는 큰 운동은 없다.[7] 아메리칸사모아는 1997년 서부사모아의 공식 명칭을 '사모아'로 바꾼 것이 미국사모아의 일부인 동부사모아 섬을 포함한 모든 사모아 섬에 대한 권한을 서사모아 섬이 갖고 있음을 암시하는 것이라고 우려하며 항의했다.[8]

There exist varying degrees of sentiment for and against unification. The independent state of Western Samoa fears uncontrolled “americanization,” while American Samoa fears the burden of uniting with an economically poorer country whose inhabitants greatly outnumber those of American Samoa and might have the decisive say in any issues decided by majority rule.
