켈리는 1991년 11월 산타크루즈(동티모르 딜리 인근)에서 발생한 학살 사건 이후 수하르토 인도네시아 대통령을 지지하며 통치에 대안이 없는 온건파임을 선언했다.[9] 켈리의 수하르토 지지는 1998년까지 이어졌고, 1930년대 히틀러의 유화책에 비유한 동료 기자 존 필거로부터 비난을 받았다.[10]

켈리 장관은 2012년 11월 영국 길라드 정부가 왕립위원회를 아동성학대에 대한 제도적 대응으로 만들기로 한 결정을 "매우 무지하다" "포퓰리즘 정치의 우울한 사례"[11]라고 비판한 바 있다.

사생활

그는 마거릿(네 레키)과 결혼했다. 그들에게는 요셉과 다니엘이라는 두 아들이 있다. 켈리는 앞서 호주 노동당 연방의회 의원, 로스 켈리 장관(née Raw)과 결혼한 바 있다.
