2012년 허블이 그린 것처럼, 25광년 떨어진 포말하우트 b(다곤)는 모성 포말하우트가 검게 그을린 채 있다.[1]2020년에 이 물체는 행성이 아닌 소행성의 충돌로 인해 팽창하는 잔해구름으로 결정되었다.[2]
가장 가까운 외부 행성의 분포

2022년 3월 2일 현재 별 주위를 도는 태양계 밖에 알려진 외계행성, 즉 행성이 4,980개가 있으며, 이들 중 극히 일부만이 태양계 근처에 위치해 있다.[3]10파섹 이내(32.6광년)에는 NASA 엑소플라넷 아카이브(Exoplanet Archive)에 의해 확인된 97개의 엑소플라넷이 나열된다.[note 1][4]10파섹 이내 400개 이상의 알려진 항성 [note 2][6]중 60개 정도가 행성계를 가지고 있는 것으로 확인되었으며, 이 범위 내 51개 항성이 육안으로 볼 수 있으며,[note 3][8] 이 중 9개 항성은 행성계를 가지고 있다.

이 범위 내에서 외행성이 처음으로 보고된 것은 1998년 글리제 876 주위를 공전하는 행성(15.3광년(ly) 거리였으며, 2021년 현재 가장 최근의 보고 내용은 글리제 367(31 ly) 주변이다.발견된 가장 가까운 엑소플라넷은 프록시마 센타우리 b로 2016년 태양계(4.25 ly)에서 가장 가까운 별인 프록시마 센타우리 궤도를 도는 것으로 확인됐다.HD 219134(21.6 ly)는 6개의 외부 행성을 가지고 있는데, 이는 이 범위 내의 어떤 항성에서도 발견된 가장 높은 수이다.

대부분의 알려진 근처의 외부 행성은 그들의 항성 가까이에서 공전한다.대다수는 지구보다 훨씬 크지만, 지구보다 질량이 적을 수 있는 두 개의 행성(YZ 세티 주변, 12리)을 포함하여 비슷한 질량을 가진 행성도 있다.확인된 여러 외부 행성은 잠재적으로 거주할 수 있는 것으로 가정되며, 가장 유력한 후보로는 프록시마 센타우리 b와 글리제 667 Cc(23.6 ly)가 검토된다.[9]국제천문연맹은 2015년 엡실론 에리다니(10.5 ly)와 포말하우트(Formalhaut) 주변 행성 등 일부 알려진 외부 행성에 적절한 이름을 부여하기 위해 '네임엑소월드'로 알려진 공개 조사를 했다.[note 4][12]

제외된 개체

태양계 내의 신체와 달리, 외부 행성을 공식적으로 인정하기 위한 명확한 방법은 없다.국제천문연맹에 따르면 엑소플라넷은 발견 후 5년 동안 논란이 되지 않았다면 확인돼야 한다.[87]외계행성의 존재가 제안된 예는 있었지만, 후속 연구 후에도 일부 천문학자들은 여전히 외계행성의 존재가 의심스럽다고 여긴다.LHS 288(2007년 15.8 [88]ly), 글리제 1151(2021년 26.2 ly)[89][90][91] 등이 해당된다.또한 알파 켄타우리 B주위에 후보들을 포함해서 제안된 외계 행성 후에 연속된 연구들에 의해 반증된 몇몇의 인스턴스,(105ly)[92]바너드 별(5.96 ly)[93][94]카프 타인의 별(12.8ly)[95]반 마넨 2(14.1ly)[96]그룸 브리지 1618(15.9ly)[97]글리제 388케이드 A(16.3ly)[99][20]글리제(16.2ly)[98].682(16.3ly)[52]VB10은(193ly)[100].d 포말하우트(25.1 ly).[2]

2021년 베가 주변에서 후보 행성이 포착됐지만 아직 확인되지 않았다.[101]또 다른 후보 행성인 후보 1호는 소행성 덩어리나 발견 메커니즘의 유물일 수도 있지만, 알파 센타우리 A 주변에서 직접 촬영되었다.[102]

국제천문연맹의 외부 행성에 관한 작업 그룹은 2003년에 행성을 구성하는 것의 상한선에 대한 작업 정의를 채택했다: 중수소의 열핵 핵융합을 지속할 만큼 충분히 크지 않다는 것이다.어떤 연구들은 이것을 목성 질량의 13배 정도 되는 것으로 계산했고, 따라서 이것보다 더 큰 물체는 보통 갈색 왜성으로 분류된다.[103]제안된 일부 후보 외선들은 SCR 1845-6357 B (13.1 ly),[104] SDSS J1416+1348 B (30.3 ly),[105] WISE 1217+1626 B (30 ly)[106]의 경우와 마찬가지로 갈색 왜성일 가능성이 있다.

현재 리스트에서 제외된 것은, 너무 작아서 융합을 거치지 않지만 별 주위를 회전하지 않는, "거룩한 행성"인 잠재적 자유 부유 아황색 난쟁이들의 예들이다.알려진 그러한 예로는 WISE 0855-0714(7.4 ly),[107] UGPS 0722-05, (13.4 ly)[108] WISE 1541-2250(18.6 ly)[109]SIMP J01365663+0933473(20.0 ly)이 있다.[110]
