미국프로농구(NBA)는 북미 30개 팀(미국 29개 팀, 캐나다 1개 팀)으로 구성된 프로 남자 농구 리그다.NBA는 1946년 6월 6일 뉴욕에서 미국농구협회(BAA)로 설립되었다.[1]1949-50시즌이 시작될 때 NBA(National Bask Association)라는 명칭을 채택하였다.[1]NBA는 국제농구연맹(FIBA)이 자국 농구를 위한 국가운영기구(NGB)로 인정하는 USA 농구의 현역 회원이다.[2]이 리그는 북아메리카의 4대 프로 스포츠 리그 중 하나로 여겨진다.[3]

없어진 NBA 프랜차이즈가 15개 있었는데, 이 중 9개가 NBA 한 시즌에만 경기를 했다.앤더슨 패커스, 덴버 너겟스, 인디애나폴리스 제트스, 쉐보이건 레드 스킨스, 워털루 호크스는 NBA에 입단하기 전 NBL에서 뛰었고,[4][5] 원래 볼티모어 총알은 NBA에 입단하기 전 아메리칸 농구 리그와 NBL에서 뛰었다.[6]패커스, 레드스킨스, 워털루 호크스는 NBA를 떠나 내셔널프로농구(NBA) 리그로 떠났으며, NBA 이외의 리그에서 존재하지 않게 된 유일한 팀이다.[7]오리지널 블런츠는 1954-55 시즌에 은퇴한 NBA에서 마지막으로 은퇴한 팀으로, NBA 챔피언십에서 우승한 유일한 팀이다.시카고 스태그스, 인디애나폴리스 올림피아스, 클리블랜드 레비언스, 패커스, 레드 스킨스 등이 리그에서 활약하며 매년 플레이오프 진출권을 따냈다.

폐 NBA 프랜차이즈를 유치한 도시 중 시카고, 클리블랜드, 덴버, 디트로이트, 인디애나폴리스, 토론토, 워싱턴 D.C.는 모두 현재 NBA 팀을 보유하고 있으며 프로비던스, 로드아일랜드, 앤더슨, 인디애나, 위스콘신 쉐보이건은 모두 NBA 프랜차이즈를 보유한 시장에서 1시간 가까이 떨어져 있다.세인트루이스버팔로는 나중에 이전할 대체 프랜차이즈를 받게 될 것이다.
