기본 단위(삼각형)와 원시 세포(헥사곤)로 주기적인 타일링이 강조되었다. 이 삼각형 패치의 복사본을 함께 장착하여 전체 평면의 타일링을 생성할 수 있다. 이를 위해서는 기본 삼각형을 180도 회전시켜 인접 삼각형에 가장자리부터 가장자리까지 맞출 필요가 있다. 따라서 색상의 타일로 타일링으로부터 상호 국부적으로 도출할 수 있는 기본 단위의 삼각 타일링이 생성될 것이다. 타일링 위에 그려진 다른 인물인 흰 육각형은 타일링의 원시적인 세포를 나타낸다. 색칠된 타일의 해당 패치의 복사본은 평면의 무한 타일을 형성하기 위해 번역될 수 있다. 이를 위해 이 패치를 회전할 필요는 없다.

기하학에서 타일링은 평면(또는 다른 기하학적 설정)을 닫힌 세트(타일이라고 함)로 분할하는 것으로, 공백이나 겹침(타일 경계 제외)이 없다).[1] 타일링은 타일링을 스스로 매핑하는 두 개의 독립적인 방향으로 번역이 존재하는 경우 주기적인 것으로 간주된다. 그러한 타일링은 두 개의 독립적인 방향에서 끝없이 규칙적으로 반복되는 하나의 기본 단위나 원시적인 세포로 구성되어 있다.[2] 이러한 타일링의 예는 인접한 다이어그램에 나와 있다(자세한 내용은 이미지 설명 참조). 단일 원시 세포에서 구성될 수 없는 타일링을 비주기적이라 한다. 주어진 타일 세트가 비주기적 기울기만 허용한다면, 이 타일 세트는 aperiodic이라고 불린다.[3] 기와집합에서 얻은 기울기는 흔히 기와집합이라고 부르지만 엄밀히 말하면 기와 자체가 기와집합이다.
