List of states and union territories of India by sex ratio성비는 한 모집단에서 여성 대 남성의 비율을 묘사하는 데 사용된다. 인도의 성비는 십년제 검열, 국가가족보건조사(NFHS), 시민등록시스템, 표본등록시스템, 건강관리정보시스템 등 여러 가지 방법과 데이터 세트를 통해 추정되었다.[5] 2014년 남성 1000명당 여성 출생 비율은 887명에서 918명으로 다양했다.[6] NFHS-4(2015-16)에 따르면 전체 인구(남성 1,000명당 페말)의 성비는 991명(도시비 956명, 농촌비 1,009명)이었다.[4]
2011~2013년 표본등록제(SRS)를 통한 인구조사를 통해 인도의 성비가 남성 1000명당 여성 909명이라는 사실이 밝혀졌다.[7] 이후 아래쪽으로 치우쳐 2013~2015년 여성 900명, 2015~2017년 남성 1000명당 여성 896명을 기록했다.[7][8] 더욱이 SRS와 함께 실시한 이번 조사에서도 차티스가르가르는 961명으로 가장 높은 성비를 보였고, 하리아나는 831명으로 가장 낮은 성비를 기록했다.[8]
인도 성비에서 남성 스퀴는 20세기 초부터 증가했다. 1901년 인도에서는 남성보다 여성 수가 320만 명 적었지만, 2001년 인구조사 때 그 격차는 1천 명 이상 증가한 3천 5백만 명이었다.[9] 이러한 증가는 여성 영아 살해, 선택적 낙태(태아기 성인지 절차에 대한 접근성을 높이는 데 도움이 됨), 여성 아동 방치 등이 다양하게 작용하고 있다.[9] 이러한 여성 자녀에 대한 선발 동기는 인도의 가부장제 사회에서 여성의 낮은 지위와 유용성이 인식되었기 때문이라는 주장이 제기되었다.[10]
