대부분의 민주당 유권자들은 힐러리 클린턴을 지지했지만,[1][2] 전통적으로 러스트 벨트에 있는 일부 민주당 카운티에서는 도널드 트럼프를 지지했다. 트럼프가 2016년 오하이오애팔래치아 공화당의 경선에서 승리하게 된 이유 중 하나는 공화당 경선에서 투표한 민주당 유권자들이 자유무역에 반대했기 때문이다.[3] 일반적으로 CNN 출구조사 결과 클린턴에 대한 지지도가 전국 평균보다 약간 낮은 오하이오주 민주당 유권자들이 2012년 롬니보다 오하이오주 민주당 유권자들 사이에서 더 높은 지지를 받고 있는 것으로 나타났다.[4][5]

힐러리 클린턴은 민주당 유권자들로부터 아팔라치아에 대한 지지도가 상대적으로 낮았다. 트럼프에 투표한 애팔래치아 민주당 의원들은 가디언과의 인터뷰에서 나프타와 석탄 채굴에 대한 우려를 언급했다.[6] 출구조사 결과 2008년 대선에서 클린턴이 압도적으로 승리했던 켄터키주에서 도널드 트럼프가 민주당 득표율 22%를 얻은 것으로 나타났다.[7][8] 미국 어느 카운티에서나 최장 연속 민주당원 투표 행진을 벌였던 켄터키주 엘리엇 카운티는 트럼프를 노렸다.[9] 테네시주웨스트버지니아주 등 일부 애팔래치아주는 출구조사를 하지 않았다.[10]

CNN 전체 출구조사 결과 클린턴은 89%의 민주당 표를 얻었으며 하원은 92%의 민주당 표를 얻었다.[11][12] 공화당 대의원 투표율과 트럼프 당선인의 투표율 차이는 6점이었다. 트럼프에게 표를 던진 민주당에 '트럼프 대통령'[13]이라는 꼬리표가 붙었다.

질 스타인을 선호하는 민주당 유권자들도 있었다. 오레곤주에서는 CNN 출구조사 결과 스타인이 민주당 득표율 [14]1%를 얻어 2012년 민주당 내 모든 제3자 투표에서 얻은 득표율과 같다.[15]
