국제올림픽위원회(IOC)가 공식적으로 '16세 동계올림픽'으로 알려진 1992년 동계 올림픽은 1992년 2월 8일부터 2월 23일까지 프랑스 알베르빌에서 열린 멀티스포츠 종목이었다.64개 국가올림픽위원회(NOC)를 대표하는 총 1,801명의 선수가 12개 종목 57개 종목에 걸쳐 올림픽에 참가했다.[1][2]
자유형 스키와 쇼트트랙 등 2개 종목은 캘거리에서 4년 전 시범종목 이후 처음으로 메달 경쟁을 벌였다.[3][4][5]또한 첫 번째 여자 종목이 바이애슬론에서[6] 열렸고 남녀 모두 크로스컨트리 스키에서 추격 종목이 추가되었다.[7]
소련 해체(1991년 말)에 이어 신생 독립국 중 6개국이 통합팀으로 함께 참가하여 유일하게 동계 올림픽을 개최하였다.[8][9]발트해 3개국인 에스토니아, 라트비아, 리투아니아는 통합팀으로부터 독립적으로 경쟁하는 것을 선택했다.[8]크로아티아와 슬로베니아 공화국은 유고슬라비아로부터 새롭게 독립하면서 올림픽에 데뷔했다.[8]독일 통일 이후, 독일 연방 공화국 연합은 하나의 연합 팀으로 대표되었다.[10]
독일은 이번 올림픽에서 총 26개의 금메달 중 10개의 금메달을 따내며 가장 성공한 팀이었다. 두 팀 모두 어느 나라보다도 많았다.[11]통합팀은 금메달 9개, 메달 23개로 두 부문에서 모두 2위를 차지했다. 노르웨이는 금메달 9개로 통합 팀과 동률을 이뤘지만 총 20개의 메달만 가지고 있었다.[11]뉴질랜드의 안넬리스 코베르거는 남반구 국가를 대표하는 사람에 의해 처음으로 이 나라의 첫 동계 올림픽 메달을 땄다.[12]류보프 예고로바는 금메달 3개, 은메달 2개 등 5개의 메달을 딴 가장 성공적인 선수였다.그녀의 통일팀 동료와 동료 크로스컨트리 스키 선수 옐레나 벨베도 금메달 1개와 동메달 4개를 획득하며 5개의 메달을 땄다.[11]38명의 선수가 알버트빌에서 한 개 이상의 메달을 땄고, 20명의 NOCs가 적어도 한 개 이상의 메달을 땄다.[11]
