Korean fortress

한국의 성곽삼국시대부터 한국인이 축조한 요새다. 한국인들은 독특하고 뚜렷한 요새 전통을 발전시켰다.[1] 한국고구려를 시작으로 [2][3][4]"성곽의 나라"[1][5][6][7]로 불리며, 한국에서 거의 2,400개의 산성이 발견되었다.[1][5]

한국의 성곽에는 산성, 읍성, 평지성, 관성, 장성, 채성 등 수많은 종류가 있다.[2]

역사

한국의 성곽은 돌문화에 기반을 두고 자연산지형에 돌로 쌓은 성곽으로, 흙문화에 바탕을 두고 평평한 땅에 벽돌과 흙으로 쌓은 중국의 성곽과 비교하면 개념적으로 완전히 다르다.[5][8] 한국의 성곽은 고구려에 의해 발명되어 백제, 신라로 전파되었고,[9] 고려와 조선에 의해 계승, 발전되었다.[5]

한국에서 거의 2,400개의 산성이 발견되었다.[1][5]

고구려의 성곽 유적은 중국을 포함한 현재까지 170여 곳에서 발견되었는데,[3] 그 중 가장 눈에 띄는 것은 고구려-당 전쟁 당시 당태종을 성공적으로 방어한 안시성이다.[10][11] 고구려의 성곽 유적은 오늘날의 몽골에서도 발견되었다.[12][13][14]

백제 출신 이민자들이 직접 건설하고 감독한 한국식 성곽을 일본에서 찾아볼 수 있다.[5]
